Living the dream, what to do with your perfect spring day in Nelson

Nelson’s record sunshine persists and streams through the bedroom window as a gentle wake up. After a short walk through Church Hill Park you're on Trafalgar Street and the trees are coming alive after a long wet winter.

Sitting down at The Kitchen you're amazed by the choice of fuel they have to offer. Whole foods with vegetarian and vegan options crowd the menu, organic coffee and cold pressed juices and superfood smoothies, making choosing your breakfast a dilemma, but ultimately leaving you feeling extremely satisfied.

You take to the road heading north, after a scenic drive past Tahunanui beach you jump on The Coastal Highway 60. Passing vineyards and estuaries you stop for a drink at one of New Zealand most unique cafes, Jester House, because there is no excuse not to stop and check out their gardens and art.

Dropping off the side of Takaka hill you find yourself on a winding road up a narrow valley. At the head of the valley you arrive at the start of the Riwaka Resurgence walk.

Fifteen minutes walk up one of the most beautiful bush tracks, it's like something out of a Lord of The Rings. You arrive at the top of the river which is flowing out of a limestone cave in the hill. The water is crystal clear and after its many days inside the caves of Takaka hill, it's icy on your skin.

Another walk is on the agenda, split apple rock.

This rock is a masterpiece of nature, how it is exactly formed is something of a legend. Sitting 50m off a beautiful deserted golden beach, surrounded by water, perfectly round and split down the middle. You really start to consider just how special New Zealand is, and today you have it all to yourself.

On the way home to Nelson it's time for a late lunch and a wine to ease into the afternoon.

Stopping at Moutere Hills Vineyard which is nestled in the rolling hills of the upper Moutere region, it's an idilic place to catch the late afternoon sun and sample some of the local wine and food. Watch out for the staff, they can be very friendly and don’t mind a drink.

Returning to the Heart of Nelson, the street and park are quiet and the birds are out. What a place to finish this perfect spring day.
